IT Co-op Program

INPO’s IT Co-Op program employs ten students each year, offering a chance to work alongside IT professionals to gain technical experience and build valuable intrapersonal skills. Since 1990, we’ve provided an outstanding work and educational experience for our co-ops.

You will get a chance to work alongside other co-op students and IT professionals on an alternating, four semester schedule. You will gain knowledge in many technical areas, as well as acquire invaluable personal skills and job experience at the same time.   • In a school sponsored work/study program consisting of alternating work/study semesters.

    Available to work for at least four semesters.

    Pursuing a bachelor’s degree with a major in computer science or computer engineering.

    In standing of a 2.5 GPA or higher.

  • Our end-user PC hardware platforms are Lenovo desktop PC and laptop workstations using Windows 10. All nine hundred of our workstations/VMs are interconnected by an Ethernet LAN which supplies access to the Internet, LAN-based E-mail, LAN-based applications, and provides for workgroup collaboration and the sharing of resources such as file servers and printers. Our network environment is an Ethernet LAN running Windows 2022 Server. We have implemented a virtual server environment of 150 Windows servers on eighteen physical hosts using VMware ESX 3.5.

    Our end-user software environment is currently Microsoft Windows 10. Applications we support include Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome as our standard web browsers and the Microsoft Office 365. We have a wide variety of other packaged software that we support including Adobe, TrendMicro, and other Microsoft products. In addition, our computer applications development department has developed many customized applications for customer use.

    Our users have Windows-based access to LAN resources when they are away at nuclear power plant sites via a VPN (virtual private network). All internal users also have access to the public Internet via our high-speed lines. INPO operates an internal intranet and a large external internet web site, but the external web site is only accessible to our members through our secure virtual private network. We also have added a third network to house a Learning Management System called the National Academy for Nuclear Training e-Learning (NANTeL).

    The software development environment and tools include Microsoft Visual Studio 2019 and VS Code for new applications. We also use Microsoft ASP.NET (Active Server Pages), HTML, Angular, and Microsoft Power Platform. We employ Azure Devops for source control of our software files. Our database management software is Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 2019.

    Managers and senior personnel are assigned iPhone devices for easy email and cell phone contact.

  • Co-op students in this role program and maintain mission-critical Windows, database, and web-based applications in a leading edge, production environment for the nuclear electric power generating industry. They perform programming, design, and analysis tasks including the development of new software, maintenance of existing applications and troubleshooting problems with data, third party software and client operating systems.

    Essential Duties:

    Develop Windows client and web-based software using .NET 4.75 Framework, Visual Studio 2019, and Azure Devops. Enhance and support existing Angular and Typescript applications that use HTML and Bootstrap on our intranet and external web site.

    Program SQL data retrieval language from Microsoft SQL Server 2019databases on the local area network. Develop Web software using IIS (Microsoft’s Internet Information Server). Troubleshoot application code and data-related problems with production applications received from the IT Help Desk.

    Perform systems analysis and user interface software screen design. Process and filter descriptions of events at plants, including data entry and collating of information received on plants. Perform programming and analysis tasks on IT work requests as assigned by project leaders. Generate graphics, charts, displays with data received on nuclear plant operations

    Develop software to process data and interface with Microsoft Excel to generate trend graphs and other graphic outputs.

  • Co-op students in this role perform a variety of technical support duties: phone and computer support for issues and/or questions being reported to the Help Desk. The ideal candidate would be one who excels in a highly stressful environment, working within tight deadlines and demanding users, and doing so with impeccable customer service skills. The candidate will be required to work effectively within a tight-knit team structure.

    Essential Duties

    Provide phone support for various software products within INPO.

    Provide phone support and hands-on repair for PCs and peripherals.

    Perform technical analysis and troubleshoot PC-based errors.

    Resolve application and user support issues.

    Work with other IT personnel to resolve system and network issues.

    Maintain documentation of installation procedures for products.

    Implement a variety of user services as directed by supervisor (i.e., repairs, moves, etc.)

    Provide telephone direction and support on operational and maintenance aspects of equipment.

    Maintain, configure, setup and troubleshoot desktops, laptops, and printers.

    Provide first and some second level support for all hardware and software related issues.

    Interact with support/supply vendors in all aspects of desktop computer operations.

    Perform other departmental duties as required.

    Roles

    During the semester, technical support co-ops rotate between two of the following help desk positions:

    Service Desk Coordinator - Responsible for answering and distributing calls to the rest of the team.

    Peer Coordinator - Responsible for loading and preparing laptops for INPO peer teams that go out on nuclear plant evaluations.

    Lab Coordinator - Responsible for building, maintaining, and repairing computers for our customers.

    Team Lead - Given to one senior co-op on the team. This person is responsible for always informing your team of news flashes or updated procedures, keeping the morale positive, and making sure each member is fulfilling their own responsibilities.
